Understanding through contrast: what the Law of Attraction is not. 5 Things you need to know.
If you're reading this, chances are you know about the Law of Attraction. Generally, it is summed up in a few catch-phrases such as:
Like attracts like.
Think positive and positive things will happen.
Thoughts become things.
You are the master of your destiny.
This is all accurate. But since the release of The Secret in 2006, many ideas about the Law of Attraction have surfaced in our culture. The simple truth is this: It is very easy to misunderstand what it's all about.
To help clear things up, here are 5 things you need to know about what the Law of Attraction is NOT:
#5. IT IS NOT WITCHCRAFT / VOODOO / OTHER NEW AGE & MYSTICAL THINGS
Now, there is absolutely nothing wrong with any of these practices -- people should be allowed to
life their lives as their wish! But Law of Attraction can often be confused as something that is solely mystical and other-worldly, even though it certainly has aspects of that.
The truth is: it exists whether or not you "practice" it.
In fact, you don’t really “do it” like something that begins and ends, such as yoga or meditation. Law of Attraction is something that you become attuned to — the practice is in the allowing of the law, not the “doing” of the law.
#4. IT IS NOT A RELIGION OR CULT
LOA certainly has a spiritual / non-physical connection. But there is no church, no dogma, no Bible, no prayers. (Okay, maybe affirmations!) The law of attraction not only transcends religion, but is actually at the heart of all religion.
At the end of the day, The Law of Attraction is a study on your relationship with yourself.
Because if you do not feel you deserve happiness, you will not attract happiness. Same with love. And success. Money. Health. Everything, really.
#3. IT IS NOT A SCIENCE… AND THAT’S OKAY!
This will certainly be a controversial statement, but the Law of Attraction is not a science… at least, not in the widely accepted definition.
And that is REALLY okay.
Think of it as a discovery, rather than a proven hard science or social science. In fact, there are many who consider it a pseudoscience.
Just to ease your mind a bit, let’s compare it to gravity (which technically has not been proven, in a manner of speaking), where we are able to measure the results of the law, but not the law itself.
For the LOA aficionados reading, you might take issue with this. But truly, we humans choose to believe in things that we can’t see, and we do it all the time. This is evidenced by buying into rumors, gossip, and assumptions in every day life.
So, believe in the validity of the Law of Attraction or not, it’s entirely up to you. Just remember, it exists whether or not you choose to believe! But when you learn to apply it, the benefits can bring some real, tangible positivity in your life.
(Note: There are some that claim a scientific relationship to quantum physics and cognitive reframing, but we will discuss a future time)
#2. IT IS NOT MADE UP / A THEORY / A FICTIONAL INVENTION
This is worth restating: the Law of Attraction is something discovered over time, but has existed in the world (nay, the Universe) since the dawn of existence. It is interwoven in the fabric of all things. But it’s not made up — and it’s not a theory. It’s a way of thinking and existing that has created some incredible results for a lot of people.
A classic example is the book Think and Grow Rich. The author, Napoleon Hill took 20 years to study the richest, most successful people in the early 1900s. The book is a manual that resulted from those studies. And as a result, he found some “laws” that were common between them all and helped them grow their massive successes, financially and personally.
The very first law, in Chapter One, is called “Thoughts are Things”.
Sound familiar? :)
For your convenience, here's the book:
#1. IT IS NOT TOOL FOR MANIPULATION
[Sit back for this one… it might be a little challenging for some.]
As the teacher Abraham puts it: “We do not live in a Universe of assertion, only attraction.” This means that we are all responsible for 100% of the things we attract: Any situation we find ourselves in, anything we believe to be true (good or bad), is a result of our own thoughts, our own focus, and ultimately our own feelings.
From the outside looking in, it could seem that things happen TO people — for example if an employee were to get fired from their job, then the firing was imposed on them. Someone did that TO them. This is where Law of Attraction steps in and say, “Not so fast. That person attracted that situation as a result of where they stood vibrationally.”
No one can “use” the law of attraction to impose something on someone else. Because in this case, the fired employee was a vibrational match to the firing. So they actually attracted it, and not the other way around.
